To choose your mouthpiece follow these steps:
1. Decide about your rim width.
2. Listen to your sound with the medium deep cup, i.e. with Nr. 2.5 Nr. 5.5 Nr. 8.5 Nr. 11.5 or Nr. 14.5. If you wish a brighter sound try the next shallower cup, or if you wish a darker sound , try the next deeper cup.
Usually Engelbert Schmid mouthpieces are used with the original bore. For individual needs sometimes its an advantage to drill out the bore for one or two tenths of a millimeter. In this case the curve of the cup has to be adjusted again.
When you visit my workshop in Mindelzell to try out mouthpieces, the first thing I do is hand you "The Block." What is "The Block?"
It is a simple, wooden holder that keeps my mouthpieces organized and gives you the perfect overview while testing them with your horn. I then personally take you into my "In House" concert hall above the workshop and let you try them out on your own! You walk out, having found your personal, "perfect fit!"
Divided in rows of six, the first two rows are dedicated to my "Vienna Style" mouthpieces. Rows three through six display my traditional style mouthpieces.
The bore size is adjusted to the depth of the mouthpiece, so the shallow mouthpieces with smaller bore sizes change gradually from left to right to deeper mouthpieces with bigger bore sizes.
Moving left to right:
